Te Reo - Colours by Ishmeet Year 3

Matariki by Kordell Year 3

Matariki by Kyahn Year 3

Matariki by Kyahn Year 3, Room 2

Matariki is when it is Maori New year. You will see 7 stars in the sky. These are 7 sisters called Matariki.

Tane got annoyed because the 7 sisters keeps going around the mum and dad. So Tane made the seven sisters constellation.

The eldest one is Tupu-a-nuku. She looks after the vegetables and she reads stories. There are blue dust around the 7 sisters.

We celebrate Matariki by collecting seafood to eat and share with our family.

Samoan Language Week

This week we celebrate the rich texture of the Samoan language, Gagana Samoa, and culture through events and celebrations happening throughout the country. A BIG thank you to Faalua Panini (Vice's mum) for coming to class today and teaching us how to count in Samoan.

Our learning

We have been learning about what symmetry is, as well as how to measure weight and volume.

For our symmetry learning we created a name alien, where we made a mirror image of our names using a symmetrical line.

For our volume we measured and compared liquid in different containers to determine which had more and which had less. It was interesting to see how the different scales work to measure weight.

Duffy Role-Model Assembly Term 1

Room 2 with our Duffy role model Peter Fa'afiu and our Warehouse sponsors. He shared with us how he came to NZ as a young boy, not understanding any English and how reading books helped him. And now he is a CEO of a successful business and a leader in his community. We love reading our Duffy books.

Get NZ Writing Initiative

Room 2 participated in a countrywide initiative from Warehouse Stationary. We had to complete a poster about who we are, draw a map of our classroom, write a poem and colour the postcards that created a poster. We all loved doing our bit and was super excited to post our special parcel to Nelson, on the South Island.

After 2 weeks of waiting, Evergreen School, sent us a parcel with everything they completed. See the photos below.

We looked on Google Map where Nelson was. We are so happy to be able to connect with people so far from us, and yet we have so much in common.

Welcome to Room 2!

We are a vibrant year 2 and 3 class! Week 1 consisted mostly of getting our routines in place and  learning to know each other.
One thing room 2 learners like to do is to read their own story books. They are pretty good at reading by themselves or reading with a buddy.

Room 10 Review

We did a reflection today on what we have learned during 2016 in our digital class.
We learned to be quality bloggers, writing kind, useful and helpful comments.
We learned that we always have a digital footprint, and should be aware of it.
We learned how to use many different DLO's such as Movenote, Storyboard That, Kahoots, Google Slide, Google Sheets, Google Docs, WeVideo and Screen Castify.

Thank you Mrs G!

Room 10 made a collaborated farewell slide for Mrs. Gattung. We appreciate that she taught us everything about being quality bloggers, writing kind, thoughtful and helpful comments.
We hope she will have a great festive season.

Preserving meat without a fridge or freezer....

We were learning about what life was like without electricity and decided that preserving meat must have been hard. We learned that the people dried their meat, so it could last longer. Further, that some countries still dry their meat as a delicacy, e.g. in South Africa and they call it Biltong, while we in NZ call it Beef Jerky. We made our own dried meat and had a go at tasting it. Most children loved it, although there were about 4 children that did not like the taste of it. But all in all, a good experience, and great writing that resulted because of it.
