Preserving meat without a fridge or freezer....

We were learning about what life was like without electricity and decided that preserving meat must have been hard. We learned that the people dried their meat, so it could last longer. Further, that some countries still dry their meat as a delicacy, e.g. in South Africa and they call it Biltong, while we in NZ call it Beef Jerky. We made our own dried meat and had a go at tasting it. Most children loved it, although there were about 4 children that did not like the taste of it. But all in all, a good experience, and great writing that resulted because of it.

  1. Wow Room 10, thank you for sharing your dried meat making process. Before I watched your video, I didn't know how to do this. However, with your very clear directions and pictures, I think I could now dry my own meat. One question though, where do I get a biltong box from?

  3. Hello room 10,
Good job on the dried meat, though the slides could be a little slower just so we can have a better read. But overall very good slide and its good that you want to take some home for your family members.

    Kind regards Blake

  6. Hi Room 10,

It is so awesome that you have learning about this and I would like to try it but I do sort of have a weak stomach so I'd better not try it. I think when it is all finished it looks a bit like dark chocolate or black licorice YUM!! If this is how they had to live in the older days I think I would dye of starvation because I cant handle 10 mins of not eating so imagine 3-4 days of not eating any meat because it has to dry and be ready to eat and not go off. How long did this process take you?

  9. Hello Room 10,

Looks yum! Wish we could make that at school I bet you couldn't wait to eat that meat after 3 days and it clearly tasted yum! Did you know red meat is good for your body?
And when you hung them was there a set temperature for the meat to dry.

  10. Morena Room 10,
It was great to see that you have shared your learning in such a creative way. I like how you have used a combination of photos, words and music to tell your story. I think I would be one of the ones who wouldn't like dried meat, in fact I don't think I would even try it! I haven't eaten meat for a very long time. I do know some people who LOVE it though so I am sure they would like to try and make their own. Your instructions will be perfect for them to follow. What kind of meat did you use?

  11. Hi Room 10.

This dried meat looks yum! I have tried it but I wish I still had some.
I wish that we could make some at our school. What type of meat did you have and where did you hang them, did you have a set temperature for them.
